Shared Hosting vs VPS Hosting

April 14th, 2010

If you are searching for an economical solution for your website without spending money as you are not worried about the performance and the uptime then you can go for a Shared hosting package. Shared hosting package is the most common and the most economical web hosting available for hosting your website. Shared server is basically hosting your website on the same server where there are many websites hosted which belong to others.

The resources of the server, like the disk space and the ram are used by all the websites which are hosted on the server. So it gets distributed and hence the website owners have to pay a part of the price of the server. The IP address and the server hostname is also Shared by all the websites on the server. Shared hosting is suitable for the people who are starting with web hosting and the website does not have much traffic on it. But when it comes to websites with high traffic, Shared hosting account is not suitable enough. The reason for this is the fact that Shared hosting is not reliable enough as the resources are Shared and they are not dedicated to one website.

On the other hand a Windows or Linux VPS hosting is just like a Dedicated server with features almost like a dedicated server.

These features are :

  • Root SSH access
  • Administrative control
  • Install custom software and much more..

As these features are provided with a Windows and Linux VPS Hosting, it makes it easier for anyone to manage the server as well as the websites. Also, as the VPS is created on a virtual environment, the resources which are alloted to your VPS can only be used by your websites and no other VPS hosted on the same Dedicated sever will be able to use the resources which are provided to your VPS. VPS is suitable for those users who do not require a Dedicated server and have a greater requirement then a Shared hosting package.

Also, as it has great control, it is a very good option for those who wish to have total control over the server like a Dedicated server at a much affordable cost. As you have the root access to the server you will be able to install third party applications on the server which is not possible on a Shared server as you do not have a full root access. Also, you will have to follow the conditions of the hosting provider when you are using a Shared hosting package and this is not the case with the VPS as you have root access to the server and full root access to it.
